Online Privacy - It’s time for a VPN
Want peace of mind online at the airport? Use a VPN.
We’ve had clients ask us over the years if they need a VPN to keep their identity protected while they are online.
A VPN is a Virtual Private Network. It’s software on your devices that “cloaks” or makes your Internet connection '“virtually” invisible to others on the same network or Wi-Fi. Why do you want to be cloaked? Public Wi-Fi is prone to bad actors just cruising around looking to see and take your data.
Ask yourself these questions:
Do you travel?
Do you like to sit in cafes and shop online?
Do you need to connect to Wi-Fi in public locations like hotels, other offices?
Do you carry sensitive information on your phone or tablet?
If you answered “Yes” to any of these, you should consider a VPN subscription. These scenarios always put you on some kind of public Wi-Fi.
Adding VPN software to your devices has never been easier. You purchase a subscription and create an account. Download the app or software onto your devices and login to your VPN account. Launch the app or software and tap a big Connect button. When it turns green, you’re using the Internet in private without any prying eyes!
I personally use ExpressVPN. There are many VPN options available. Along with ExpressVPN, SurfShark and NordVPN are on the Forbes Magazine list of Best VPN Services in 2025.
I pay $99 per year for ExpressVPN. There are some pretty good deals out there. I started using their software several years ago. I found it easy to install and use. I like that with the press of a button I am virtually protected on whatever device I’m using. Check pricing on any VPN you wish to use. Use caution as they can add all kinds of other services that make the price increase. Sticking with a simple VPN is best. So, how do you make the VPN work when traveling or connecting to a public Wi-Fi?
First, make sure you’ve set up your devices with the VPN software while on your home network / Wi-Fi. That way it’s ready when you’re on a public Wi-Fi. Once you are at a location where you need Internet, you have to first connect to the public Wi-Fi. I know. Scary. But you need Internet access to activate the VPN. As soon as you have Internet, launch or tap on your VPN. Tap the Connect button. When it turns green, you’re protected. I do this at the airport, on the plane, at cafes, hotels and any public Wi-Fi, if I need it.
